Positions of the 2014 DC Mayoral Candidates on Social Issues

We are featuring the positions of Mayoral Candidate David Catania on social issues, including sexual health education, HIV/AIDS prevention and family structure at  We will also add information about the positions of Muriel Bowser and Carol Schwartz.

Here is an excerpt about the David Catania commissioned Sexual Health Report:

An article in the Washington Post on condom distribution cites Councilmember David Catania's Youth Sexual Health Project, which I have written about before.  The beginning of the report cites Canadian Health Education Guidelines:

Sexuality encompasses sex, gender identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy, and reproduction.  Sexuality is experienced and expressed in thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behavior, practices, roles, and relationships.

A proposed sexual health education curriculum for 7th to 12th grade instructs youth to view art that includes homo-erotic art by Jessica Walker (Caution:(includes macabre and pornographic images) .   It is interesting to note that parents were not included as one of the three groups that were interviewed to determine attitudes toward sexuality. Instead, youth, school nurses and health providers were interviewed.

Summer Saturday Mentoring successfully concluded on August 23, 2014.  Howard University 2014 Graduate Syreeta Crawford and Senior Brianna Bingham lead the sessions.  Over the course of four Saturdays, participants learned about resisting peer pressure and making wise decisions, the meaning of the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, how to lead a meaningful life, and about the Principles of Spiritual Growth.

STAR Guide Mentor Brianna Bingham,   Howard University senior shared:

The topics are very relevant to any adolescent or anyone between the ages of high school and college.  These are real life situations that you go through [that teach] the importance of remaining abstinent.   Brianna also added It's not about you, it's about you going out there and trying to help someone else.
