“Is Sexual Abstinence Better for Unmarried Persons?”
By: Charise Hughes, 11th Grade

Sexual Abstinence is a very controversial topic; Sexual Abstinence is the practice of voluntarily refraining  from all forms of sexual and drug  Activity . Sexual   abstinence in my opinion is better for unmarried persons because it is simply a decision that is made to become mentally and physically pure. I also feel that when you are single and  abstinent there is so much pressure released from your mind and spirit. Being abstinent is an issue in our country between and among the wed and the  unwed, being abstinent is a decision that should be made based on religious beliefs as well  as  your intuition. Sexual  abstinence is better for  unmarried people because being in love is such a beautiful thing and sometimes people believe that sex is love and in my opinion that’s not the case. Sex can hurt us in so many ways, Sex can damage you mentally and physically and although some of us know that we still choose the other path. Sexual abstinence may be better for   unmarried people because if you aren’t married and you are being sexually active, it is inappropriate because it’s not of God and it ' s against the bible. I also feel that abstinence is   good for married people also; I think it’s a way to find out that a person is your true companion and it ' s also a way to make sure that  are living up to your vows.  Sexual Abstinence in this country is not very effective for  married or   unmarried people but I  feel that it is necessary because it helps to prevent STD exposure,   pregnancy, and other bodily harm;   it also saves you from risk of mental danger such as depression and  thoughts of suicide. I 100% agree with sexual abstinence being more effective for unmarried people because you aren’t tied down and you can think for   yourself without a companion trying to force you to do something that you don’t agree with. Being unmarried leaves you open to many opportunities with people of the opposite sex that you may potentially like and you don’t have to feel under as much pressure to make a decision and when you are by yourself most of the time you will ultimately make the right decision for your self . American people are very, very fortunate because  through out   history   in many countries having sex before marriage was  morally wrong because of their strong religious views .    Many people were stoned to death if pregnant who were not  already married but in today’s society there is nothing that the law can do because it’s a fee country and America also doesn’t have a national religion. Being abstinent for anyone is a beautiful thing and a decision that unmarried people should be pushed to make because if you are not married having sex one time can change the rest of your life, and I don’t mean for good if it is continually done. Abstinence is also good for unmarried people who have already had sex ; they can turn to secondary virginity,  they can stop where they are and give it all up and become pure, saving  their body until marriage. Life is too  short not to be abstinent because when you are out getting a  two  minute thrill in that  two  minutes you can have Syphilis, HIV or any other disease that is out here because none of us are exempt from theses life changing diseases. In conclusion I would like to infer that I agree with abstinence in all forms that it comes in.

Abstinence
By Raquel Reed

For me personally I do think being abstinent is better for unmarried people. People who are married commit themselves to one person that they believe they will be able to love and trust. People that aren’t married shouldn’t have sexual relationships because they don’t know what cold or might happen. There is no guarantee that they won’t get pregnant or HIV, even if it is protected. If one of those things do happen they could be in a predicament that they probably couldn’t handle and it could mess up their life. When you have those kinds of relationships you have to be ready for anything. To be ready you have to be with someone you trust and know won’t let you down. Usually people who are completely sure of that are married. Also having a sexual relationship is an expression of love. If you don’t really love the person you are engaging in the relationship with, you should not be in it at all. If you do really love them then you should get married to them, share your love, and have a family.
By being abstinent until you are in a committed marriage you are saving yourself for someone that is special and feels the same way about you as you do about them. Also if you remain abstinent until the day of your marriage you are having respect for yourself. You aren’t letting anyone misuse your body or take advantage of it. God made people to have that kind of relationship at a special time in our lives. That special time is after you are married. Marriage is very important. You should remain pure and clean until the day you are united with another person. Then after that it is right to have sexual relationships with your spouse. If you are not ready for the commitment of marriage then you are no where near ready to be in sexual relationships.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

It seems like everybody is having sex. Some people feel they have to do it just to be accepted . Is sexual abstinence better for unmarried persons? That is the question asked . In my opinion I truly believe that a woman’s body is her temple. This is true not only for women but also for men as well. Now a days people feel that having sex can only affect a women because it shows on her natural appearance and not on a man. What they fail to realize is that the man has as much responsibility as the woman does . If young people at the age of 13 through 21 make up their minds that they are going to stay sexually abstinent and that they are also going to succeed in life then it is up to them to prevent any unnecessary obstacles that might prevent them from being successful .Like what things you ask? First of all like having sex , and living with a responsibility that you  can not handle.
I have already said that  I believing that a women’s body is her temple I also believe that if you put your mind to something you can succeed. I think that it is better for a woman to get educated first so when a guy leaves her she will have something to fall back on . Teens today think that birth control and condoms are 100% effective but that is not true. Condoms and birth control are only 50% effective . The only true way to stay abstinent  is to be sex free. Yes abstinence is the only 100% sure way to prevent pregnancy. When you are not having sex there is no way for a sperm to fertilize an egg. Staying abstinent not only protects teen girls but also teen boys from STDS. Some STDS spread through oral -genital sex , anal sex or even intimate skin -to -skin contact without actual penetration . Half of the teens only want to have sex because of peer pressure and things seen on TV and in the movies. All I am saying is Guard your sex diamond and stay sex free . Don’t rush to do something you can’t handle at this age.

A surgeon General’s report “Facing Addiction in America” finds that abuse of substances such as alcohol and drugs is a growing problem in the United States. The adolescent years are critical at-risk periods. Research show that many adults with substance abuse problems started drinking or taking drugs in their teen years. Teen-age substance abuse is linked to sexual risk behaviors that lead young people to contract sexually transmitted diseases and become pregnant. More needs to be done to lessen such consequences.

The report concludes that prevention programs for this risky behaviors should focus on individuals, peers, families, schools and communities. When students’ schools environment are supportive and parents are engaged in their children’s live they are less likely to use alcohol or take drugs or engage in premarital sexual behavior.

The CDC says in their resource that for primary prevention activities targeting substance use and sexual risk behaviors to be effective, they should include “Peer-led drug and alcohol resistance programs”.

But why not include peer led sex resistance programs?  That is exactly the proven concept behind the Urban Life Training proposal for every school district to have a Right Choices Youth Prevention Corps.

Seventy eight percent of West Virginia ninth grade students are abstaining from sex.  Yet, this percentage drops to 32% for twelfth grade students.  We are missing a great opportunity.

Youth who are abstaining from sex can serve as a great resource who can encourage their peers to make right choices.  Youth who are not sexually active enjoy helping their peers as a peer counselor.  They also gain speaking skills and a mutual support group.

There are many benefits for youth who decide to wait to have sex.  Here are a few:

  • Young adults who graduate from high school, get a full time job and wait until 21 and married before having children have a 7% chance that their children will live in poverty. Those who don’t follow any of these rules have a 74% chance that their children will live in poverty.
  • Couples not sexually active before marriage report higher levels of romance, are more likely to be faithful in marriage and have a lower risk of divorce.
  • Being sexually active is correlated with higher rates of self-destructive behaviors such as much higher rates of using alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana and other drugs, running away from home, being arrested by the police and suspended from school for both boys and girls.
  • In addition, sexually active girls (ages 12-16) have a two or three times higher risk to be lonely, upset, or tense, five times higher risk to consider hurting themselves and six times higher risk to attempt suicide.

There were 2920 teen pregnancies in West Virginia in the most recent reporting year (2013), and 1416 births in 2017.   These births cost taxpayers $37,953,000.  Why not leverage the positive message that can be given to peers by youths who are abstaining from sex.  Such a program will pay for itself and save taxpayers countless dollars.

Katherine Wambui known as Katie Vobic is a broadcaster of Hero Radio in Nakuru, Kenya.  Nakuru is the fourth largest city in Kenya and is 86 miles from Nairobi the capitol city of Kenya. Wambui visits schools across the city of Nakuru, teaching the values of abstinence to teenagers.  She teaches the dangers of being sexually active, drugs and alcohol. She started the abstinence program in Nakuru three years ago.  She is also road safety ambassador for Nakuru.  Wambui is making a difference in teen lives and helping them to make the right decision to be sexually abstinent.  Wambui says abstinence costs you nothing and being sexually active can cost many millions of dollars.

Valentine’s Day is usually viewed around the college campuses as one thing, sex.  But this year and over the past decade Love & Fidelity Network (LFN) sponsored college groups around campuses nationwide to Be Unexpected. The posters encourages students not only to be abstinent, to not get caught up in the media, and to build better relationships with your friends and parents.  In the press release they suggest you also ask your grandparents, parents or other married couples you are close to about how they met. College students we need to be abstinent, find good friends, and look to better role models then the media so you can be successful in life. If you are single or have boyfriend or girlfriend be abstinent so you can be wonderful parents and have love & fidelity in marriage. Remember students it is never too late to pledge a life of sexual abstinence until marriage.

Aim for Success Inc. a is Dallas, TX based non-profit  and it has received the funding back for their Xtreme Abstinence Program in Corpus Christi, TX for this school year September 2016-June 2017 and beyond.  Corpus Christi is a coastal city located in Southeast, TX. Xtreme Abstinence Program presents an hour long presentation of facts about STDs, condoms why you should be abstinent and shows graphic images of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Herpes infections on male and female genitalia. The definition for Genitalia means the organ for reproduction.  The funding for Aim for Success Inc. and the Xtreme Abstinence Program was cut in Corpus Christi in 2006. Parents are allowed to opt their teenager out of this program.  The Xtreme Abstinence Program is taught from middle through to high school now in Corpus Christi.

Some of the facts that this programs presents:

1.       “1,500 teen girls get pregnant every day in the U.S.”

2.        “10,000 teenagers get STDs every day”. Most teens do not have symptoms.

3.       “1 out 2 sexually active young people will acquire an STD before age 25.”

4.       HPV is the #1 cause of throat cancer. You can also get HPV from Oral Sex.

Aim for Success Inc.  was founded by Marilyn Morris in 1993. Marilyn Morris found out she was pregnant at age seventeen. She and her boyfriend decided to get married at ages of 17 and 18. From this experience Marilyn and her husband Charles have passion and have helped young people to stay abstinent.  The organization has helped over 2 million teens, parents and educators.   I do not recommend getting married at ages of 17 and 18. Marilyn is also very lucky that her boyfriend did not leave her. “Eight out ten teen dads do not marry the mother of their child.” Remember teens it’s never too late to become sexually abstinent. I recommend marrying in your early to mid-twenties.

The Author of this article traveled around the country of Uganda to schools that were teaching abstinence education as the main part of the schools sex education curriculum. Through his experience he learned that, if younger children asked about sex their question should be answered by their parents, according to what was appropriate to their age.  If I was parent of five year old I would say sex is what happens when a man and a woman love each other in order to have babies. Men and Women should of course wait to have sex until marriage.   Not all cartoons, music, picture books, or another form of media are good for children. Some cartoons and other forms of media encourage sex.  In these schools that the author went to their abstinence education curriculum starts at 11 years old. The abstinence education also continues into high school. One of the girls at these schools in Uganda asked the author “Is it true if you wash your vagina with Mirinda Fruity or Coca-Cola you don’t get pregnant?”  Mirinda Fruity is a fruit soda. The author said “no and you can get pregnant if you have sex.  Condoms fail to prevent pregnancy twenty-three percent of the time between teen couples. Parents should encourage their pre-teen/teenager to be abstinent from sex until marriage. Remember even if you didn’t it doesn’t mean your teenager cannot stay abstinent from sex until marriage.
